How To Apply to our Program
Who Should Apply: Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, chemistry, physics, or one of the biological or medical sciences. A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required. In addition to meeting the general requirements of the UW-Madison Graduate School, coursework in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, physics, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry is required. However, course deficiencies are made up during the first year of your graduate studies.
When To Apply: Our deadline is December 15, 2009, for consideration for admission in Fall 2010. Early applications are strongly encouraged!
How To Apply: Below is a checklist outlining the supporting documents required. Following the list are detailed instructions regarding each item. We recommend that you read through the instructions before beginning the application process. It could save you time!

1. Complete and submit the online application form.
To help you move more quickly through the online application instructions, these are the main areas on which to focus:
- Click on online application form link above.
- Start with the sentence (midway down the page): To complete this application you will need the following:
- Click on the Start a New Application button in the yellow box, upper left-hand corner. Once you begin your application, youll be assigned a Pin Number. You’ll also be asked to create a password. You’ll need this information if you wish to access or complete your application at a later date.
- In the Intended Field of Study section of the application, to apply to the IPiB Program, select the Biochemistry PhD program from the drop down menu bar. The IPiB is a new integrated program between the Biochemistry and the Biomolecular Chemistry Departments. Application materials sent to Biochemistry will be automatically forwarded to IPiB.
2. Personal Statement / Reasons for Graduate Study.
In 1-2 pages, describe your career goals, research interests, past and present research experience, and why you’ve chosen the IPiB for your graduate studies. Submit online with your application.
3. Application Fee.
The $56.00 application fee is non-refundable and can be paid by credit card (Mastercard or Visa), debit/atm card, personal check or money order, drawn on an U.S. bank. Please do not send cash. Mail checks or money orders to:

4. Three Letters of Recommendation. Three separate Online Letters of Recommendation are required. They should be written by individuals who can accurately evaluate your potential for graduate study, and should include current or previous research advisors.
You have 2 jobs in this process:
a) List your references and the requested contact information in the online application. Our Graduate School will email instructions to each of your references. The email will include your name with a link to Biochemistry’s electronic recommendation forms.
b) Contact your references ahead of time, so that they can watch their email for our Graduate School’s request for your recommendation letters.
5. Official Transcripts.
Mail the official transcripts from all universities or colleges that you have attended to IPiB (address below).
6. General GRE.
Plan to take the GRE by December. You should take the verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing tests. Arrange to have ETS forward your scores. The only code you?ll need is our Institution code (1846). Only scores forwarded from ETS will be accepted.
7. Advanced (Subject) GRE.
Strongly recommended, but not required. If you take the exam, you should take the GRE by December. We accept the subject exam in biochemistry, chemistry, or biology. Arrange to have ETS forward your scores. The only code you’ll need is our Institution code (1846). Only scores forwarded from ETS will be accepted.
8. Summary of Accomplishments Form.

9. TOEFL.

What Happens After I Apply. The IPiB Admissions Committee, composed of faculty members from both the Biochemistry and Biomolecular Chemistry Departments, will review your application and supporting materials. Our Student Services Staff will communicate with you regarding the status of your application throughout the application and review process. Applicants receiving invitations to visit can choose from 1 of our 4 recruitment weekends. During our recruitment weekends, you will have the opportunity to interview with our IPiB faculty, meet our graduate students, and tour our campus and city with our faculty and graduate students. Offers of admission are made after your visit. Our IPiB Admissions Committee will contact you via email, followed by a formal letter outlining our offer package.
