Governance

The Integrated Program in Biochemistry is overseen by a Steering Committee, which provides Program and policy recommendations for approval by the two departmental faculties. Committees administering the Program include the Admissions Committee, Education and Career Development Committee (ECDC), New Student Orientation Committee (NSOC), Recruiting Committee, and Graduate Leadership & Development Committee (GLDC). Learn more about these committees and their membership below.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is chaired by the IPiB Program Director and provides Program and policy recommendations. Membership is a democratic group composed of faculty members from the Biochemistry and Biomolecular Chemistry Departments, including faculty representatives from each of the committees listed below, a graduate student representative and two graduate student CEC members.

Admissions Committee

The Admissions Committee ranks applicants and selects candidates for interview based on their graduate school applications, committee rankings, and projected class size. Offers of admission are made with the co-chairs of the Recruiting Committee.

Education and Career Development Committee (ECDC)

ECDC tracks students’ progress through the program and oversees all degree requirements, including courses and seminars, thesis committee meetings, required teaching and optional professional development, and the preliminary examination.

New Student Orientation Committee (NSOC)

NSOC supervises Orientation Week activities and lab rotations, advises students prior to their thesis lab match, and recommends final lab matches to the IPiB Steering Committee and department chairs.

Recruiting Committee

The Recruiting Committee oversees the scheduling and coordination of recruiting weekends and candidate interviews with current faculty. With the co-chairs of the Admissions Committee, the Recruiting Committee identifies which applicants will be offered admission to IPiB. The Recruiting Committee also writes flex funds applications to secure recruitment funds.

Graduate Leadership & Development Committee (GLDC)

GLDC serves as liaison between IPiB faculty and students, shares student concerns, develops programmatic initiatives that foster leadership and development, promotes educational, professional, and social interaction among students, and conducts community outreach.
